The objective of the present investigation was to study the influence of different solvents employed for recrystalization of ibuprofen on physicochemical properties of recrystalized ibuprofen crystals. Ibuprofen was recrystallized with methanol, isopropanol, chloroform and ether by maintaining similar conditions. Marked differences in crystal habit of the samples obtained from these solvents were observed. More particularly, crystallization provided an improved process for preparing large size crystals of ibuprofen, lower bulk volume, and improved flow properties, faster solubility properties. The samples crystallized from methanol had a polyhedral crystal habit, while those from isopropanol and chloroform were elongated crystals and the crystals obtained from ether are cubical. Samples obtained from ether exhibited greater solubility. Sample obtained from isopropanol exhibited greater porosity. Samples obtained from methanol exhibited highest bulk density and best flow rate.
